Climate-neutral social housing on a human scale

The Social Energy Jump was a pilot project involving the renovation of 4 social housing units. This project was developed by Interbuild together with its partners Cordium, VEB, Energivest and Enervalis. The project was supported by VLAIO and FLUX50.

The challenge for us presented itself in combining all kinds of new techniques that were used to bring the renovation to a successful conclusion and that greatly accelerated the entire process. These new techniques were certainly necessary, given that the execution time available to us was also very short, which presented an additional challenge for Interbuild. The residents continued to live in their homes during the renovation, where we also tried to cause as little disruption as possible. For this reason, the roof and facades, among others, were prefabricated at an external location, after which they could be quickly installed on site.

This project focuses on the social housing sector that is currently struggling with a partially outdated patrimony and insufficient budget to address this challenge. The Social Energy Jump aims to accelerate the ambitious renovation of social housing and prepare the social housing companies' patrimony for the 2050 climate goals.

As for this project, cost-efficient and industrialized solutions were developed to renovate old social housing into energy-neutral homes-and this while remaining inhabited. We achieved energy neutrality by first providing the house with an insulating envelope with prefabricated facade and roof; that roof was equipped with solar panels for energy generation; and finally, we provided the house with new techniques integrated into an "energy module". That energy module works exclusively with electrical techniques (heat pump, D+ ventilation, inverter, etc...), which also means that the house no longer produces emissions.
